Running your business from home can be polarizing, if not complicated; you think you know for sure that flexibility and convenience are the reasons why you decided to leave your nine-to-five, but when you hear your spouse say something like ‘John’s working from home so he can watch ESPN all day long’ or your teen telling her friends ‘Mom’s like, working from home so she can, you know, ground me in real time’, sometimes you can’t help but agree with them.
Taking advantage of the flexibility of working at home does not mean that you must answer to everyone’s beck and call, or be distracted by each little thing. Sure you might go “dude, that’s a given”, but try saying it again while actually in the middle of a work day. When caught in a moment you might be torn between completing a pressing requirement, such as an email to be sent to a client, and answering the phone that keeps ringing off the hook — only for you to answer the phone and hear your best friend from college yell ‘WHAZZAAAAAAAAA!!!’ — moments like this would want to make you pour a can of Bud all over your best bud’s head, don’t you agree? You want to treat your business like business if you want to be productive with it, rather than a pastime you can take care in the most slovenly conditions.
First of all, do away with wearing pajamas to work. You are what you wear, and don’t let anybody convince you otherwise. The clothing that you wear can reflect how you feel about work. That said, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you would have to work in a suit and demand that your children call you Sir or Ma’am instead of Dad or Mom — the only exception to the former would be if clients have to visit your place of residence for business purposes. It just means that, by wearing your pajamas and sweat pants all the time you will not feel as though you are really in the mood to put forward your most productive self. Take a shower, put on clothes that you wouldn’t want to wear if you want to catch some zs, get to work and feel classy and professional for the rest of the day.
Next, you may need to go through a paradigm shift in terms of considering mapping out your work schedule each day. If you realize that you have scheduled your work for the day alongside helping your spouse change diapers or cook lunch or right at the same time your favorite football team is playing, then that is NOT dedication. Your schedule should include the time you get up, when you will start working, and when you will take your breaks. But speaking of interruptions, you should make certain that your schedule contains as little of these as possible. This may mean investing in a second phone line, and moving your home office away from the television or other parts of the house where you may be distracted.
The last thing you have to ensure would be that everybody you work with is aware of your schedule and what it entails. If someone calls to ask you out to a leisurely lunch, think first about whether or not you would be able to do this if you were working a regular job. Scheduling leisure time on schedule days off means that you are putting time and effort into your work, and this will be reflected in your income.
